In conjunction with emissions reduction targets, economies around the world are adopting climate and ESG regulations affecting imports and exports, such as the European Union’s deforestation regulation. Multinational companies are also increasingly looking to ensure that their supply chains are traceable and transparent. These shifts have implications for Southeast Asian producers, particularly SMEs and smallholders, who may have difficulties meeting these requirements. This panel will discuss the challenges for ASEAN economies in demonstrating their sustainability credentials and providing data for trade partners, as well as the green business and investment opportunities available if ASEAN and developed markets can work together. The panel will showcase current ESG initiatives and sustainability priorities in the plantations and commodities sector, including ongoing efforts to protect the livelihoods of communities and biodiversity in the region.
- How are deforestation regulations affecting global trade? What are the implications and how do sustainability practices in ASEAN compare to those of competitors in other regions?
- What is needed to enable supply chain due diligence in ASEAN’s commodities sector – such as government policies or private investment?
- How can ASEAN countries and developed economies beyond the region cooperate in strengthening sustainability in ASEAN’s agribusiness sector?

Efforts are underway to transform ASEAN’s plantations and commodities sector from a source of carbon emissions to a carbon sink – contributing to the region not just in terms of export commodities and livelihoods, but also in biodiversity, conservation, and natural capital. This panel will explore the role that Indonesia and Malaysia’s commodities sectors are playing in ASEAN’s climate neutrality and net zero commitments, including new avenues for decarbonisation such as the increasing use of sustainable aviation fuel and other biofuels in transport, as well as the use of biomass in renewable power generation.
- How is the commodities sector decarbonising their operations, and what are the remaining areas where companies need to reduce their Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions?
- How are businesses playing a role in achieving national carbon neutrality and net zero targets via carbon accounting and stewardship of natural capital?
- What is needed to scale up the use of biodiesel and renewable diesel, sustainable aviation fuel, and biomass for electricity generation?
