Reinventing “Sustainable” in Commodities

New Markets for ASEAN Commodities

Southeast Asia’s agroforestry and commodities sector is at a crossroads. Concerns persist over shifting US policies and stricter EU rules. In response, producers are diversifying beyond major markets – building links among mid-sized economies, boosting South-South trade, and strengthening domestic consumption. This panel examines the future of agricultural commodity markets and what this means for ASEAN’s trade and exports.

  • How are trade flows between ASEAN and global markets evolving, and what does this mean for our region’s exporters?
  • How are sustainability regulations shaping trade in commodities? Do we need to reinvent sustainability standards?
  • What strategies are needed to balance export growth with domestic consumption in ASEAN countries, ensuring both stable supply and prices?

Innovation, Risk, and Strategy for Bioenergy

In a world of rising oil prices and global supply concerns, it is increasingly urgent for ASEAN to explore alternative fuels for transport and new sources of electricity. Attention is turning to the prospect of agribusinesses converting waste-to-energy via biogas and biochar, as well as supplying feedstock for biodiesel and sustainable aviation fuel. This panel explores how commodity businesses are contributing to the low-carbon economy, and what ASEAN’s manufacturing, aviation, and other sectors are hoping to see from the region’s bioenergy supply chains.

  • How will agricultural commodity prices and markets evolve over the next 10 to 20 years, and what does this mean for producers, traders, and investors?
  • How is demand in energy, biodiesel, sustainable aviation fuel, chemicals, and other industries shaping ASEAN’s production and downstream sectors?
  • How are agricultural commodity and food companies aligning their practices with demands for circularity and net zero emissions?

Fire and Haze in Southeast Asia – Risk and Readiness

Southeast Asia is entering a period of heightened climate uncertainty in 2026. The convergence of climate stress from a projected transition to El Niño and current deforestation trends is increasing the danger of fires and haze. Adaptation strategies are needed to integrate climate intelligence into agricultural production and planning. This dialogue will examine how the region is preparing for fire risks, including improvements in prevention, preparedness, and response since previous El Niño cycles, and what can be done to reduce vulnerability to fire while supporting the long-term productivity of ASEAN’s agricultural commodity and food systems.

  • How are factors like El Niño and current economic conditions shaping fire and haze risk? What is different compared to previous cycles?
  • How have governments and the private sector strengthened fire preparedness via policy and technology? What are the remaining gaps, and what investment is needed to address them?
  • How can our region strengthen collaboration to address transboundary haze and build resilience in agricultural systems against climate volatility?
